About Our School
Welcome to Kingsthorpe Village Primary School which has, at its heart, a strong and effective TEAM ethos (Together Everyone Achieves More). As a school, we deliver a broad and balanced topic based themed curriculum linked to our successful butterfly model (a creative planning system).
We champion creativity within teaching and learning and aim to inspire our pupils, providing them with life skills they can apply in a variety of situations. We complement the curriculum through the provision of extensive extra-curricular opportunities and school events throughout the year and our pupils are enthusiastic, hardworking and resilient.
We recognise the benefits of celebrating our successes and developing effective community links and are continually looking for ways to improve the educational experienced of our pupils as future leaders in this technological world.
As a school we promote key British values throughout the year and pride ourselves on being a supportive and compassionate school.

At Kingsthorpe Village Primary School we value a creatively rich and balanced curriculum based around the “Butterfly Model” and linked directly to the New National Curriculum. We link learning through topic based themes where pupils can become inspired and engaged in their learning environments. We adopt a depth of learning model where children can apply their new learning in a variety of different ways and we assess against key age related milestones. Core values are taught through the school ethos of TEAM and success celebrated throughout the school and with the wider community. At Kingsthorpe Village we aim to provide a wide range of fully inclusive learning experiences that are delivered to embrace different learning styles and maximise pupil’s engagement, enjoyment and understanding of how we learn to prepare children to become lifelong learners in this technological age.
The school curriculum comprises all learning and other experiences that each school plans for its pupils. The national curriculum forms one part of the school curriculum. All state schools are also required to make provision for a daily act of collective worship and must teach religious education to pupils at every key stage.
Curriculum Intent
Basic Principles
Curriculum drivers shape our curriculum breadth. They are derived from an exploration of the backgrounds of our students, our beliefs about high quality education and our values. They are used to ensure we give our students appropriate and ambitious curriculum opportunities. The curriculum drivers at KVPS are: The Arts; positive Mental Health; and Initiative.
Cultural capital gives our students the vital background knowledge required to be informed and thoughtful members of our community who understand and believe in British values.
Curriculum breadth is shaped by our curriculum drivers, cultural capital, subject topics and our ambition for students to study the best of what has been thought and said by many generations of academics and scholars.
Our curriculum distinguishes between subject topics and ‘threshold concepts’.Subject topics are the specific aspects of subjects that are studied.for this paragraph.
Threshold concepts tie together the subject topics into meaningful schema. The same concepts are explored in a wide breadth of topics.
Concepts are split into three Milestones, each of which includes the procedural and semantic knowledge students need to understand the threshold concepts and provides a progression model.
Our curriculum distinguishes between subject topics and ‘threshold concepts’.Subject topics are the specific aspects of subjects that are studied.for this paragraph.
Within each Milestone, students gradually progress in their procedural fluency and semantic strength through three cognitive domains: prime, advancing and deep. The goal for students is to display sustained mastery at the ‘advancing’ stage of understanding by the end of each milestone and for the most able to have a greater depth of understanding at the ‘deep’ stage. The time-scale for sustained mastery or greater depth is therefore two years of study.
As part of our progression model we use a different pedagogical style in each of the cognitive domains of basic, advancing and deep. This is based on the research of Sweller, Kirschner and Rosenshine who argue to direct instruction in the early stages of learning and discovery based appropriate later.
At Kingsthorpe Village Primary School, we plan our curriculum on a two-cycle system (Cycle A and B). We are currently using Cycle B during the academic year 2023-2024. We have a overview document to show the themes being taught in each year group and our Teaching and Learning Policy shows how this will be taught.

We expect high standards of behaviour from everyone in our school community; visitors, staff, parents and children. There is an expectation that everyone accepts responsibility for their behaviour, shows respect for themselves and others, and has due regard for their own and other people’s property. We promote good manners and courtesy at all times.
Our school has a calm and caring atmosphere, and behaviour of children is generally very good. We have a Behaviour Policy that provides a framework for managing behaviour both in the classroom context and on the playground. On the rare occasion when a child has an issue with managing their own behaviour (and there are no signs of improvement), the class teacher will contact the parent at an early stage to plan a way forward. A copy of our behaviour policy can be found on the policies page of our school website.
We have a zero tolerance policy with regards to bullying. When there has been an incident of bullying reported, parents of both the victim and perpetrator are made aware of the problem. We endeavour to resolve the issue through reconciliation and apology, supporting both the victim and the bully.
Children are taught to recognise and understand the difference between right and wrong, and explore the concepts of truth, fairness and justice. We prepare children for growing up in a society of diverse cultures and faiths.
